Urad and Urad Dal

rad is mainly grown as a secondary mixed crop along with cotton, maize, jowar and other coarse cereals. Urad is mainly a khariff crop, but it is also grown to some extent in the rabi season also. It is sown either in February, June-July, October depending on the area where it is cultivated. Urad is a highly prized pulse, used in several south Indian dishes like idli, vada and dosa etc. It is also used for making papads and used for consumption along with rice and rotis.

Tur and Tur Dal

Tur is mainly a khariff crop and is cultivated from June-July to September-October. The peak arrival period begins from October at the major trading centers of the country. The major producing states are Maharashtra , Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat (0.1-3 million tons). India accounts for more than 80% of the world's tur/pegion peas production. India imports around 4-5 lakh tons of tur annually. The major country from where India imports tur is Myanmar.

Masur Dal

Masur (Lentil) is probably the oldest of grain legumes to be domesticated. Lentil is a nutritious food legume. It is cultivated for its seed and mostly eaten as dal. Dal is seed that is decorticated and split. They are an excellent source of complex carbohydrates and are high in fibre and in protein. Globally around 40 lakh tons of masur (lentil) is produced a year. India, Canada and Turkey are the largest producers of lentils in the world. India is the largest producer with a share above 25% of the total global production. While exports are mainly to to Sri Lanka, Egypt, UAE, Sudan, Yemen and Bangladesh, imports are from Canada, Australia, Turkey and USA.

Red Yellow Gram (Chana and Chana Dal)

Red gram or pigeon pea ranks highest amongst the pulse crops of India, consumed by large population of the country. Cajanus cajan is certainly one of the oldest cultivated plants in the world. Ancient traders on the route between Zanzibar, India and Sri Lanka introduced the plant into India. In India it is mainly grown in U.P, M.P, Bihar, Maharastra, A.P and Tamil.Nadu.

Chana is a rabi crop and is shown from nov to december and harvested from Feb to March. The peak arrival period begins from March-April at the major trading centers of the country.
